Although we live in Florida the blackmail situation involving Miss New Jersey is big news. She is a young woman that posted images on a private section of her Face Book web page and faced a possible loss of her crown. The issue is not about the pictures, it is about young people providing too much private information in cyberspace.
The internet is a large space and many people can gain access to private information that we post. It is even advised to not put too much information in personal e-mail. If this is not something that you want the public to find out about you then my advice is not to place it on any internet web site. Remember future employers maybe looking and googling and you do not want one thing in you life to have a detrimental effect on the rest of your life.
We even see it in one CEO that tried to anonymously give negative commentary on a rival company that his company would later attempt to purchase. Despite trying to remain anonymous, the information came out.
Remember, although we may be alone in a room while we post information, we are never alone on the internet.
As parents we need to remind our children to be wary of revealing too much on the internet. If it is something that you would not reveal to a stranger on the street, think twice about posting it on the internet.
