Parents,Not Schools, are making children overweight

“The nation’s schools, under fire for unhealthy school lunches, well-stocked vending machines and phys ed cuts, may actually do a better job than parents in keeping children fit and trim. A study found that 5- and 6-year-olds gained more weight over the summer than during the school year, casting doubt on the assumption that kids are more active during summer vacation.”

During the summer many children do seem to spend more time in the house watching TV and eating lots of snacks. It is easier for children that are inactive to gain more weight during the summer. Keeping a child healthy is the responsibility of the parent. It is easier to give children junk for because most come prepackage and require little preparation, but preparing healthy snacks is not that time consuming.

Some Easy snacks are:

  • Carrot sticks
  • Apple Slices
  • Grapes

Also families might try taking a walk each evening aroung the neighborhood, going to the park or just playing games in the backyard.

According to HealhierUs.gov

“Being active for 30-60 minutes on most days can help you build strength and fitness, relax and reduce stress, gain more energy, and improve your sleep. These benefits all add up to decreasing your risk of heart disease and other conditions, such as colon cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure.”
