St. Petersburg, Florida
St. Petersburg is situated on Tampa Bay's peninsula, surrounded by sandy beaches. The town was founded by Russian immigrant Peter Demens. Originally planning to live by his cousin's orange grove in Jacksonville, he decided he could get cheaper land moving down the coast. He was soon in the lumber business, selling railroad ties to the Orange Belt Railroad. He ended up taking over the company when it couldn't pay him for materials, eventually extending the railroad across Florida. When it reached Tampa Bay, he named the terminus St. Petersburg after the Russian city he lived in as a child.
In 1914, the world's first commercial airline was started in St. Petersburg, carrying passengers across the bay to Tampa. The award for excellence in commercial air service is named after the St. Petersburg–Tampa Airboat Line's pilot, Tony Jannus.
Before WWII, St. Petersburg's economy was centered around seafood. Florida didn't become the spot for retirees until air condition became widely available in the late 1940's. Between 1940 and 1960, the population jumped from 8,000 to 180,000 people. With an average of 360 sunny days a year, it's no wonder St. Petersburg is often called "The Sunshine City." Today it has also become a major commercial center, housing offices for several multi-national corporations. The population today has leveled off at about 248,000.
Locals commonly call the city "St. Pete," shortening the gulf coast's beach's name to "St. Pete Beach" in 1994. This four-mile stretch of sand is home to several historic buildings including the bright pink Don Cesar hotel and the Vinoy, both of which are on the National Historic Register. They share a similar history: after being a hot spot for the wealthy in the 20's and 30's, they were taken over during WWII for military use, with the Cesar becoming a hospital, and the Vinoy an army training camp. Eventually they fell into disrepair until being revitalized in the late 80s and early 90s, returning to their status as world-class hotels. Together with three miles of beach front on the bay, St. Petersburg has more public waterfront than any other American city.
Even after St. Pete became a retirement community, the pier has remained a central part of the city. The current pier, opened in 1973, has five stories of shops and restaurants, and is one of the leading tourist destinations. Surrounding downtown has a general art museum as well as one dedicated to Salvador Dali, while the Tampa Bay Rays play baseball at Tropicana Field. |
