Updated Belle of the Ball Prom Dress Donation

promdressRedSmallWe recently received updated information about the Belle of the Ball project and wanted to create a separate post to let you know about it.  The original post was from several years ago and we appreciate getting the update and wanted to make everyone aware of the changes.    Hopefully this can help a teen girl you know or maybe you can be of help to the organization.

Belle of the Ball Announces Spring Prom Shopping Dates, New Location in Clearwater
Non-profit organization Belle of the Ball Project will provide prom dresses to in-need, low-income high school girls on four Saturdays this spring at 1210 Holt Avenue, Clearwater. This is a NEW location. The charity is no longer located in the Seminole Mall.
The dates are Saturdays March 28, April 11, April 25 and May 9, and the hours are from 10am to 2 pm. These will be the only dates to receive a dress.

Dresses are available to all greater Tampa Bay area in-need, high school girls only. We respect the honor system. No referral letter is necessary. No appointment needed. A $1 donation is requested but not necessary.

For low-income, in-need, high school girls only.

Free Playin’ in the Park Tuesday as Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa

From March through August, every first Tuesday of month there will be a free Playin’ in the Park event at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa.  For those that are attending the fit Playin’ in the Park, there were will be different activities for the children, and some free samples.    It will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.  , so you can even bring younger children, and kids that attend school during the day.

The event also corresponds to the Target Tuesday at the Glazer Children’s Museum.     So while you are downtown you can enjoy both events.

Have a Free Fun Tuesday at Glazer Children’s Museum in Tampa

Tuesday, April 2nd, is Target Tuesday at Glazer Children Museum in Tampa.  Children and accompanying adults will get free admission from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Only adults that are with children are admitted, and all children must be accompanied with an adult.     Target Tuesday is usually the first Tuesday of the every month.

This month’s Target Tuesday will feature appearances from the curious little monkey –Curious George.  His appearances are scheduled to be at 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 6 p.m.

Westfield Brandon and Books-A-Million Super Why Event

Books-A-Million at the Brandon Westfield mall will be having a Super Why event in their stores on July 19th.  Super Why is an educational cartoon that appears every weekday on PBS.   The program teaches early reading skills while discovering life lessons from classic children’s stories.   Children at the Book-a-Million event will get story time, snack, and craft time.    The first 75 children will also get a free Super Why book.  The event starts at 4 p.m.

24 Hours of Disney Magic Kingdom

This leap year two Disney Parks are doing something cool by opening for 24 hours straight.  Magic Kingdom in Florida and Disneyland in California will  be part of the event when both will be open February 29 6 a.m. to 6 a.m.  March 1, 2012 local time.     Normally Magic Kingdom is opened from 9 a.m. to 9p.m., with extended hours for Disney Hotel guests during certain mornings and nights of the week-these extended hours are usually just an hour or two.     What will guests do for the 24 hours and will anyone be able to stay awake for 24hours straight?  Who knows?   This is something I would have loved to have done  when I was a teenager.  Remember staying up about this long for Grad Night?

City of Tampa Celebrating the Tampa Bay Lightning with Free Public Event

The Tampa Bay Lightning are making their fans very proud as they continue to play fantastically on the way to another Stanley Cup win.  On Saturday, May 14th, the Lightning will be playing in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Bruins at the St. Pete Times Forum.  However, celebrating for the Lightning making it this far will be happening this Friday the 13th in downtown Tampa.

Tampa Mayor, Bob Buckhorn, will have a banner ceremony Friday at 11am in front of Tampa Municipal in downtown Tampa.  The banner will be hoisted on the Tampa Municipal Building.  Following the banner hoisting fans will be treated to a free lunch in Lykes Gaslight Square Park.  During the lunch Thunderbug, the Lightning Girls, and the Lightning Street Team will be in attendance. 

Another thing that fans will not want to miss is the Lightning themed sand sculpture that will be at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.  Start at 7:30 Team Sandtastic will be sculpting a Lightning sand sculpture out of 12 tons of sand at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

Univision and Verizon Holding Auditions in Tampa for Spanish-Speaking Soccer Fans

image Verizon and Univision Television Group are seeking one talented Spanish-speaking soccer enthusiast to become the official Reportero para Verizon and a member of Univision’s sports team providing live coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer matches in South Africa.

Interested applicants can audition live or submit a video online via Univision.com (keyword: Reportero Verizon) highlighting their ability to report; knowledge of sports; creativity; overall personality in front of the camera; and why they should be chosen as a Reportero para Verizon for Univision. The winner will be selected based on those criteria.

There are going to to several auditions across the United States. A live audition will occur in Tampa and Miami and other cities across the United States.

MOSI 2009 Homeschool Day

MOSI is having their annual Homeschool Educators Open House on August 25, 2009. Admission is free and home educators get the opportunity to see what things are available for homeschool students. MOSI does have monthly science classes throughout the year. They also host an annual homeschool science fair and have a science fair workshop that helps prepare students for the fair.

During the Homeschool Educators Open House you can receive a 20% discount on your MOSI membership.

The Old Main Street Merchants Association is hosting a downtown party from 5-10 p.m. with food, drinks and live music from the local rock band Rye Road. The band takes the stage at 5:30 p.m. and will move into Cork’s Cigar Bar, 425 Old Main St., after the fireworks display, which starts at 9:30 p.m. from the Palmetto side of the river.

Busch Gardens Holds Monthly Auditions For Entertainers

Have a desire to entertain and share your talent? Busch Gardens Tampa Bay holds monthly auditions for entertainers. This includes singers, dancers, instrumentalists, improve actors, stilt walkers, costume characters, specialty groups, technicians, dressers, seamstresses, and make-up artists. You must be 18 years-old to apply.

Auditions are the first Wednesday of each month.

This Memorial Day local businesses have decided to show their appreciation to the military and their families. Memorial Day, of course, is not about the barbecues, beach and time away from work. Memorial Day is time to remember and celebrate those gave the ultimate sacrifice in service for the United States of America.

All military active duty, activated, retired or drilling reservist or National Guardsmen are entitled to two free general admission tickets to The Florida Aquarium for themselves and a guest. Additional family members (up to 4 people) can receive 50% off of general admission tickets. Must present military ID at time of purchase. Discount is valid May 23, 24, 25.

Lowry Park Zoo

In honor of Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, any active duty, activated, retired or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman is entitled to free admission on May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day). He or she will need to show a Department of Defense photo ID at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo ticket counter. As many as three direct dependents of military personnel also are entitled to free admission. Dependents may take advantage of the offer without their service member, though an adult must accompany minor dependents.

Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am Continues Tradition of Helping Tampa Bay Charities

Four different Tampa Bay charities will benefit from the 2009 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. The Child Abuse Council, Diabetic Charitable Services, Everyday Blessings, and Judeo Christian Health Clinic will all receive a portion of the proceeds from this year’s event.

This year’s tournament will take place April 13-19. Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, Jim Courier, Michael J. Fox, George Lopez, Nancy Lopez, Stone Phillips, Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Vinny Testaverde, Joe Theismann, and Mark Wahlberg are the celebrity participants. Brooks, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker, will be defending his 2008 amateur championship win.

Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am is a part of the Champions Tour.

The Champions Tour’s primary purpose as an entity of the PGA TOUR is to provide significant competitive and earnings opportunities for players age 50 and older; to protect the integrity of the game; and to help grow the reach of the game in the U.S. and around the world. In addition to providing competitive opportunities for its membership, Champions Tour events also generate significant sums of money for charity.

For over 20 years the Outback Gold Pro-Am has been able to raise over $8 million for charities in the Tampa Bay area.

If you are unable to make it out to TPC Tampa Bay, you can watch portions of the event on the Golf channel on Friday and then on NBC on Saturday and Sunday.
