Some parents do not realize the type of ballet shoes and clothes that their children need until the first day of ballet class. Each dance studio will have its own dance clothes requirements. Some studios may not have any specific requirements when it comes to ballet class, but during recitals you will most likely be asked to buy a specific leotard, tights and ballet shoes.

Before going out and purchasing your child's ballet attire, get the specific dress requirements from the ballet instructor. There are some dance studios that require that the ballet students wear soft pink, another may want baby blue, while another may ask that the students wear a black leotard. Sometimes the color of the ballet attire may depend on the level of the ballet dancer. Some have other specific requirements such as not having a leotard with an attached skirt.

Another recommendation is to play close attention the ballet shoes. Ballet shoes with cardboard in the soles should be avoided. These shoes do not allow the ballet dance to bend her/his toes and are her/his feet.

You should also avoid buying the bedroom slippers that are made to look like ballet shoes. These shoes are usually sold at major department stores.
